The fastest way to ruin a good optic is the same way most people mount one: by feel. This pistol optic screw torque guide exists because under-torque lets the dot walk off zero under recoil, and over-torque cracks housings and strips slide threads. The right number, the right driver, and the right thread locker is the entire job. Below is the reference for the optics that fit the LPWS2011 Atlas Plate system β€” and the mistakes that cost shooters their zero.

// 01 Why Torque Matters

An optic mounting screw is a tiny fastener doing a hard job: holding a sight steady through thousands of slide cycles, each one a sharp recoil impulse.

Under-torque and the screws back out β€” the dot drifts, the optic shifts, and your zero is gone, usually mid-string. Over-torque and you stretch or shear the screw, crack the optic housing, or strip the threads in the slide. On a custom 2011, stripped slide threads are not a cheap fix.

The fix is simple and non-negotiable: a calibrated torque driver, the correct screw, and blue thread locker. Hand-tightening to feel is how most lost-zero problems start. Even experienced gunsmiths torque optic screws with a wrench.

// The Rule

Most pistol red dots mount at 15 inch-pounds with blue thread locker. That single number covers the majority of RMR- and Holosun-pattern optics. The exceptions matter, though β€” and the manufacturer's printed spec always wins over any chart, including this one.

// 02 The Torque Reference Table

These are the optics supported by the LPWS2011 Atlas Optic Plate system, with the screw type, driver, and torque most commonly specified by each manufacturer. Specs vary by optic generation and screw size, so confirm against the documentation in your optic's box before final torque.

// 03 Screws, Bits & Thread Locker

The screw is part of the spec. Length and thread pitch are not interchangeable between optics. A screw that is too long bottoms out or protrudes into the slide and can interfere with the firing pin channel β€” a genuine safety problem, not a cosmetic one. A screw that is too short grabs only a few threads and will shear. Replace screws when you re-mount; small fasteners that have been torqued, loosened, and re-torqued are the ones that snap.

The driver does the precision. Most pistol optic screws take a T10 or T15 Torx bit. Use a quality bit that fully seats β€” a worn or undersized bit cams out and rounds the screw head before you reach spec. Pair it with a calibrated torque driver, not a fixed-tension key.

The thread locker holds the number. LPWS specifies blue Vibratite or Loctite 242 unless the optic maker states otherwise β€” medium strength, removable with hand tools and a little heat. Never use red (permanent) thread locker on an optic screw. Let blue locker cure fully before shooting; loosening screws before cure is a common cause of shearing.

Seat the Atlas plate flush in the slide pocket before tightening. Snug both screws lightly first, then alternate in small increments up to final torque β€” never run one screw all the way down first. A plate that isn't flush will never hold zero no matter how tight the screws are.

// 04 Common Mounting Mistakes
  1. Guessing the torque. "Tight enough" is not a number β€” the most common reason a dot won't hold zero.
  2. Wrong screw length. Mixing screws between optics or plates. Verify length for your specific slide and plate depth.
  3. Reusing fatigued screws. Re-torquing the same screws through battery changes and re-mounts work-hardens them until they shear.
  4. Red thread locker. Permanent locker on a screw that will eventually need to come out for a battery or re-zero.
  5. Skipping the cure. Shooting before blue locker sets, then wondering why the screws backed out.
  6. Plate not flush. Torquing down on a plate that isn't fully seated in the pocket β€” a built-in zero problem.
// DeltaPoint Pro β€” Read This First

The Leupold DeltaPoint Pro has a known install hazard on many milled slides: the right-side mounting screw can be too long and interfere with the extractor / firing-pin components, which can create a dangerous malfunction. The screw must be addressed β€” typically filed to length β€” before installation, and torque verified against Leupold's current manual. Do not install a DPP without resolving screw length first.
