// 02 The Shipping Process — Step by Step

Click each step to expand the full detail. Do not skip any step — especially Steps 01, 04, and 05.

01
Contact Us First — Before You Do Anything

Do not ship anything before contacting us. Reach out by phone or email to discuss the services you need. This lets us give you any specific instructions, confirm our current address, and prepare for your firearm's arrival.

Firearms that arrive without prior communication may be delayed while we identify the work required. A quick call or email before you ship keeps everything moving.

02
Verify Unloaded & Safe

Before touching any packaging materials, ensure your firearm is completely unloaded. This is non-negotiable.

  • Remove the magazine
  • Lock the slide back and visually inspect the chamber
  • Physically check the chamber with your finger
  • Check the magazine well a second time before proceeding
03
Package It Correctly
  • Hard-sided case or well-padded box. Use a sturdy container that won't flex or compress during transit.
  • Internal padding. Foam, bubble wrap, or similar material — the firearm should not shift or move inside the package at all.
  • Discreet packaging. Do not write "gun," "firearm," "pistol," or any firearm-related text on the outside of the box. Plain brown box, no markings.
  • No loose parts. If shipping components separately from the frame, package each securely in its own padded pouch or wrap.
04
Include Required Documentation

Every shipment must include the following inside the package — not emailed separately, physically inside the box:

  • Copy of your current driver's license. Clear, readable scan or photocopy. Must be your current, valid ID.
  • Address on ID must match your return shipping address. Federal law requires we ship the firearm back to the address on your license — no exceptions.
  • Written service request. A detailed description of exactly what you need done. The more specific you are, the faster we can process your order.
// Critical

If the address on your driver's license does not match your current shipping address, contact us before shipping. We cannot ship your firearm back to an address that does not match your ID. This is a federal requirement, not a preference.

05
Ship via FedEx or UPS Only

Federal law prohibits shipping firearms via USPS. Use FedEx or UPS only. At the counter, you will be required to declare the package contains a firearm — this is a legal requirement, not optional.

  • Declare the firearm at the counter when dropping off
  • Request Adult Signature Required at delivery — strongly recommended
  • Insure the package for the firearm's full replacement value
  • Obtain and keep the tracking number
// USPS is Illegal

Attempting to ship a firearm via USPS is a federal offense. FedEx or UPS only, no exceptions.

06
Track Your Shipment

Keep your tracking number from FedEx or UPS and monitor progress until confirmed delivered. Once we receive your firearm, we will contact you to confirm arrival and provide a service timeline.

If you have any concerns about your shipment in transit, contact the carrier directly using your tracking number before reaching out to us.

// 04 Frequently Asked Questions

Your firearm will be shipped back via FedEx or UPS with Adult Signature Required to the address on your driver's license — the same address you included with your shipment documentation. You will receive tracking information when it ships.

We do not ship to addresses that differ from the ID on file. If your address has changed since you shipped to us, contact us before your work is complete so we can work through the process correctly.

Yes — insure your firearm for its full replacement value. Carrier claims on uninsured or underinsured packages rarely recover full value. The cost of insurance is small compared to the risk of shipping an uninsured custom pistol worth thousands of dollars.

Both FedEx and UPS offer declared value coverage at the counter. Declare the actual replacement cost of the firearm, not a lower number to reduce the fee.

Only send what is specifically required for the service being performed. Do not include extra magazines, holsters, ammunition, or accessories unless we have specifically asked for them.

Unnecessary items add liability and complexity to your package. When in doubt, ask us during your pre-shipment contact what needs to come with the firearm.

Slides and barrels that are not serialized frames are generally not classified as firearms under federal law and can be shipped via standard carriers including USPS, FedEx, or UPS without the firearm declaration requirements.

However, you should still contact us first to confirm the best shipping method for your specific components. Include a written service request and your contact information inside the package regardless of carrier.

// Perfect Zero Atlas Machining

If you're shipping slides or barrels for our Perfect Zero Atlas 1911 DS machining services, the same packaging best practices apply — padded, discreet, no external markings. Contact us before shipping to get the current address and confirm your service order.

Yes. Firearm shipping laws vary significantly by state. Some states have additional requirements for transferring firearms through gunsmiths, including requiring the work be performed through a local FFL in your state rather than shipping out of state.

It is your responsibility to know your state's laws regarding sending a firearm to an out-of-state gunsmith before shipping. When in doubt, consult a local FFL or firearms attorney before sending anything.

// Legal Compliance

This guide covers federal requirements. State and local laws may impose additional restrictions. Always comply with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations. LPWS is not responsible for customer non-compliance with local law.
