You're watching Open and Limited shooters track their sights with zero effort while their pistols stay perfectly flat. You want that performance — but the $5,000+ price tag and 12-month wait for a custom 2011 are deal-breakers. You've thought about building your own, but you aren't a machinist and "cutting lugs" sounds like a quick way to turn a $400 barrel into a paperweight.
In a standard 2011, the front sight is mounted on the slide. When the gun fires, the sight reciprocates back and forth — making it harder for your eyes to track and reacquire the target.
An Island Barrel features a top rib that sits through a cutout in the slide. The front sight is mounted directly to the barrel. Because the barrel doesn't move rearward the way the slide does, your front sight stays in your field of vision through the entire firing cycle.
Faster follow-up shots. Tighter transitions. Lower Alpha times. It's the same reason the best Open and Limited shooters in the country run island barrel setups — the sight picture never leaves. NOTE: Our kit does not have a front sight nor a dovetail cutout.
The LPWS Island Barrel Build Kit is the first competition-grade foundation designed specifically for the shooter with little to no gunsmithing experience. You don't need a machine shop. You don't need a $300 set of lug cutters. You need patience, hand tools, and the willingness to follow instructions.
Whether you're shooting USPSA, IDPA, or just want the ultimate range build, this is your shortcut to the winner's circle without the custom shop price tag or the 12-month wait.
The barrier is always the same: barrel fit. Normally, fitting a barrel requires precision-cutting the hood and the bottom lugs — tasks that demand specialized tooling and extreme technical skill. Most first-time builders don't have either.
This kit provides the core high-performance components that define a match-winning pistol:
The 9mm Island Barrel ships in three configurations. All porting is done at the barrel — not the slide.
Because we want you to have the ergonomics that fit your hand, you choose your own finishing components. To complete this build you'll need to source:
The kit ships raw — no surface finish applied. This is intentional. Fit and function-test first, then choose your Cerakote, DLC, or PVD. LPWS will list vetted finishing shops on the FAQ page before the first kits ship.
No lathe, lug cutters, or milling machine required. The heavy machine work is done before the kit leaves our shop.
Recommended experience level: Intermediate. If you've built or detail-stripped a 1911 before, you're well-prepared. First-time builders should watch a few 2011 assembly videos first — our step-by-step guide will take you through the rest.
Every kit ships with community access to the LPWS Founders Group — builders and staff available for real fitting help and build support. You're not on your own.
