DLC is the hardest finish available for a custom 2011 pistol. But how hard, exactly? How long does it last? And how does it compare to Cerakote, PVD, and CrN? Here are the actual numbers — hardness ratings, thickness specs, service life data, and how LPWS applies DLC on the Islandboy platform.

// 01 What DLC Actually Is

Diamond-Like Carbon is not a paint, a coating applied in layers, or a chemical treatment. It is a physical vapor deposition process — PVD — that bonds a carbon layer to the base metal at the molecular level inside a vacuum chamber. The result is a finish that is part of the metal, not on top of it.

That distinction matters. Traditional coatings like Cerakote sit on the surface and can be scratched, chipped, or worn through. DLC at 1 to 4 microns is thinner than a human hair but harder than the steel underneath it. Once it is there, it takes extreme abrasion to remove it.

In PVD deposition, the slide or barrel is placed in a vacuum chamber. A carbon-based gas is introduced and ionized. The ions are accelerated toward the metal surface at high energy, embedding into the surface lattice rather than coating over it. This creates a tetrahedral amorphous carbon structure with diamond-like bonding properties.

The bond is not adhesive — there is no glue layer, no mechanical grip. The carbon atoms occupy spaces in the steel's crystalline structure. That is why DLC cannot be applied over existing coatings, why it requires a clean bare metal surface, and why it does not add meaningful thickness to tight-tolerance components like barrels and slides.

DLC at 1 to 4 microns adds negligible dimensional change. A standard 2011 barrel fit runs at 0.0001 to 0.0003 inch clearance. DLC does not affect fit tolerances — which is why it is the finish of choice for precision-fitted island barrel builds.

DLC has a coefficient of friction of approximately 0.05 to 0.10 depending on the specific deposition process and the mating surface. Standard steel-on-steel contact in a 2011 runs 0.15 to 0.45 depending on lubrication. Cerakote runs 0.20 to 0.30. Chrome nitride runs 0.15 to 0.25.

On a 2011 pistol, lower friction means the slide cycles more freely, the barrel-to-slide interface generates less heat under sustained fire, and rail wear is dramatically reduced. // 02 Hardness and Service Life Numbers

These are the numbers that matter for anyone choosing a finish for a working 2011. Hardness determines resistance to abrasion and wear. Service life is the practical result of that hardness under real-world use conditions.

// Note on Hardness Comparison

Cerakote hardness is measured on the pencil hardness scale (9H = hardest), not Rockwell HRC. These are not directly comparable scales. Cerakote 9H resists surface scratches well but is far more susceptible to edge wear and impact chipping than DLC or CrN at equivalent HRC ratings. For barrel and slide surface wear specifically, HRC is the relevant metric.

// 03 DLC on the LPWS Islandboy Platform

The Islandboy Variant 11.0 ships as an all-DLC build — slide, barrel, and frame components finished in DLC. That is not a cosmetic decision. It is a performance specification. Here is the reasoning behind each component choice.

An island barrel is hand-fitted to the slide and frame with tight tolerances. The hood fit, bottom lug fit, and barrel-to-bushing interface are all fitted to specific clearances measured in ten-thousandths of an inch. Adding a thick coating after fitting would change those clearances.

DLC at 1 to 4 microns adds no meaningful dimension. The barrel is DLC-coated after fitting, so the fit tolerances are preserved exactly. The DLC surface on the barrel rib — the section that contacts the slide — reduces friction at the highest-wear point in the gun, extending the service life of both barrel and slide.

The Chiraq slide machining pattern creates aggressive serrations and relief cuts across the slide face. Those edges — especially the front serration peaks — are the first surface to show wear on any finish. On Cerakote, the edges wear through to bare metal within 5,000 to 10,000 rounds. On DLC, the edge hardness matches the flat surface hardness. Wear is even and extremely slow.

// 04 When Not to Choose DLC

DLC is the right finish for most working 2011 builds. It is not the right choice for every situation. Here is when to consider alternatives.

Cerakote is the right choice when color matters. DLC comes in black only. If you want a two-tone build, a custom color, or a pattern, Cerakote is your finish. Cerakote applied over a properly parkerized or phosphated surface holds up well on lower-round-count builds and is significantly less expensive than DLC.

Cerakote is also appropriate for builds that will sit in a safe more than they will be shot — collector pieces, presentation guns, or builds that will see fewer than 10,000 rounds lifetime. At that round count, the service life difference between DLC and Cerakote is not meaningful.

Chrome nitride offers hardness and service life close to DLC at a lower cost, and it produces a silver-gray finish that some builders prefer aesthetically. On the Islandboy Commander Variant 11.4, LPWS offers a CrN/DLC combination — CrN on the frame components and DLC on the barrel and slide interior surfaces where wear is highest.

CrN is also slightly more forgiving on corrosion resistance in high-humidity environments. For a duty gun that will see salt air, sweat, and infrequent cleaning, CrN is a practical choice.
