If you've tried to put a red dot on a Glock, you've hit the footprint wall: the factory cut doesn't natively match common optics, the plate stack adds height, and cheap plates drift under recoil. This Glock optic cut guide breaks down how Glock optic mounting actually works — MOS plates, the new Gen 6 system, and direct-mill cuts — so you can mount a dot that holds zero instead of fighting it.

// 01 How Glock Optic Mounting Works

Factory MOS (Modular Optic System). Glock's MOS cut is proprietary — it doesn't natively fit common optics. Instead, a metal adapter plate bridges the slide to a standard footprint. It works and it's swappable, but every plate adds a stack of parts and screws, raises the optic, and introduces a known failure point: factory plates have a reputation for shifting under sustained recoil, costing you zero.

Gen 6 ORS (2026). Glock's Gen 6 pistols, launched January 2026, replace MOS with the new Optic Ready System. Polymer plates screw directly into the slide with no metal adapter, covering RMR/SRO-class and DeltaPoint-style footprints; the optic sits lower and there's no metal plate to loosen. Some footprints, like the Holosun 509T, still need an aftermarket ORS plate.

Direct-mill (optic cut). A direct cut machines the optic footprint into the slide itself. No plate, no adapter, no extra screw set. The optic sits at the lowest possible height for a better co-witness, and the screws thread deep into the slide for a mechanical lock. This is the gold standard for a dot that has to hold zero under hard use.

Every adapter plate is a compromise. It adds height, it adds a second set of screws, and it puts more leverage on the mounting hardware — which is why plate slop is the most documented cause of zero drift in high round-count use. A direct cut removes the middleman:

LPWS direct-mount cuts give 4mm+ of thread engagement directly into the slide versus roughly 2mm on a factory plate, machined to the lowest depth that maintains structural integrity. Fewer parts, lower dot, a zero that holds.

// 03 Footprints & Which Optic Fits

A footprint is the bolt pattern on the underside of the optic — hole spacing and recoil-lug shape. The cut has to match the footprint of the optic you actually run. The common ones:

// 04 Co-Witness, Screws & Zero

Co-witness. A lower cut means a lower dot, which changes your iron-sight options. With many RMR-footprint optics on a direct cut or MOS, front sights around 0.300–0.365" typically give a lower-1/3 co-witness; suppressor-height sights give a fuller, absolute co-witness. Decide your co-witness before you order sights.

Screws & torque. The screw is part of the spec — wrong length protrudes into the slide and can foul internals. Most pistol red dots torque to 15 in-lbs with blue thread locker, but verify against your optic's manual. The full breakdown lives in our pistol optic screw & torque guide.

The Leupold DeltaPoint Pro has a known hazard on many Glock slides: the right-side mounting screw can be too long and interfere with the extractor / firing-pin components. It must be addressed before installation. A proper direct cut accounts for this; a careless plate install does not.

// 05 What to Look For in a Quality Cut
  1. Tight tolerances. A mechanical-lock fit, not a loose pocket. Machining to 0.001" keeps the optic from moving under recoil.
  2. Maximum thread engagement. Deep enough for a real bite into the slide — the direct-cut advantage over a thin plate.
  3. Correct depth. Lowest practical pocket for bore axis and co-witness, without compromising slide integrity.
  4. Refinish included. A quality cut is re-coated after machining — bare machined steel rusts. LPWS Glock cuts include single-color Cerakote.
  5. Right footprint, right model. Cut for your optic's footprint and verified against your specific Glock generation.
